Gaillard Island & Middle Bay Lighthouse

Cruise into the heart of Mobile Bay on this scenic and wildlife-rich adventure featuring one of the area’s most iconic landmarks and one of its most important bird sanctuaries.

Your trip begins as we head out into the middle of Mobile Bay to the historic Middle Bay Lighthouse, a striking 1885 structure standing on stilts. Captain John Michael will share the history of the lighthouse, offering insight into its role guiding vessels through these waters for over a century while providing a picture-perfect backdrop for photos.

From there, we continue north toward Gaillard Island, often called “Pelican Island” by locals. This protected bird sanctuary is one of the most important nesting sites along the Gulf Coast, home to thousands of birds including brown pelicans, terns, gulls, herons, and ibis. It is the only place in Alabama where brown pelicans nest, making it a must-see for birders and photographers.

While we respectfully cruise around the island (landing is not permitted to protect the wildlife), you’ll experience incredible up-close views of birds in flight, nesting colonies, and seasonal activity that changes throughout the year—including the chance to spot the highly elusive roseate spoonbill, a vibrant splash of pink that adds a truly special sighting to any trip.

Along the way, keep an eye out for dolphins, shrimp boats, and the ever-changing scenery of Mobile Bay—one of the most dynamic estuaries in the country.

Fort Morgan / Dauphin Island

Explore the rich history and remarkable wildlife at the mouth of Mobile Bay on this unforgettable coastal adventure.

This trip begins as we cruise toward the historic Fort Morgan, a massive masonry fort built in the early 1800s to guard the entrance to Mobile Bay. From the water, you’ll get a unique perspective of this iconic stronghold as Captain John Michael shares the story of its role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War—one of the most significant naval battles in U.S. history.
Across the bay on Dauphin Island, you’ll view Fort Gaines, which worked in tandem with Fort Morgan to defend the harbor. Here, you’ll hear how Union forces fought to gain control of the bay, highlighted by Admiral Farragut’s famous command during the battle. Together, these sites bring history to life as you take in the very waters where it unfolded.
As we cruise along the shoreline and surrounding waters, the focus shifts from history to the incredible natural beauty of the area. Dauphin Island is known as one of the top birding destinations along the Gulf Coast, serving as a critical stopover for migratory birds. Depending on the season, you may see shorebirds, wading birds, pelicans, or raptors.
